If you already have a domain with an external domain host, you can keep it and simply connect the domain to your new website retaining your old provider. In case you want to have two domain names, you also need to follow this process.
💡 Note: If you have a Yearly or Bi-Yearly subscription, you can also register a domain with Lodgify or transfer your existing domain to us. Learn more about these options in this article. Learn here how to upgrade your subscription.
Link your domain
To complete this process, you will need to edit the settings of both your Lodgify page and your DNS Manager in your external host account.
- Go to Menu and select My Websites.
- Choose the website you want to amend, click Edit and select Settings.
- Select the Domain tab and click Link existing domain.
- A pop-up window appears. Enter your domain address, review the configuration settings and click Accept.
In your Domain Provider (where your domain is hosted)
Each domain provider works slightly different so please make sure you get in touch with their support team if the information provided below doesn't add up or you can't get the domain to work correctly. In the table you can find specific instructions for domains hosted with GoDaddy and some general guidelines to follow for other domain providers:
|If the domain is registered with...||then...|
💡 Note: Please ensure that there are no other A-records with these names. As well, please make sure that there are no CNAME records with these names.
Lastly, there should also be no AAAA records.
💡 Note: The nameservers should always be provided by the domain host. This means that no changes to the nameservers are necessary when linking your domain to your Lodgify site.
💡 Note: It may take a few hours before the DNS changes become effective. If after 48h you still receive this error message, check your A records, they may have been set up incorrectly. If you need further help, simply contact us.
💡 Note: If you have a yearly/bi-yearly subscription you can also transfer your domain to Lodgify for free. Find out how to transfer your domain. To keep the Google ranking of your old website and apply it to the new website, you should redirect your URLs. Redirecting the URLs will tell Google that the content that could be found previously on the page https://www.hello-berlin-flats.com/photos can now be found on a different website https://www.hello-berlin-flats.com/gallery. We suggest you ask your domain provider for assistance with the redirection. Once you have a custom domain connected to your website, verify the ownership of your website in the Google Search Console which allows you to monitor and maintain your website's presence and optimize its performance in the Google search listings.
Connect an additional domain
You can also connect an additional domain to your website. Maybe you had a different domain on your old website and don't want to give it up because your guests know this one so well, or you simply want to have an additional one. Facebook, for example, has more than one domain, you can get to your facebook site by typing in www.fb.com or www.facebook.com, both direct to the same page (with default domain www.facebook.com).
If you want to connect more than one domain to your website, follow the steps above to link the second domain (the first one could be either linked or hosted directly in Lodgify) and then make sure you select which of the domains you want to use as default. So when a guest types in your second domain, he will automatically be redirected to your default one.
